Painting New Plaster in Darlaston

Painting new plaster in Darlaston, Kings Hill and Moxley. Drying time respected, a proper mist coat, then the finish coats, so the paint does not flake off fresh skimming.

Freshly plastered walls in Darlaston homes are a common job after a rewire, a knock-through or a new extension. New plaster is thirsty and it has to dry out completely first, which usually means a few weeks depending on the thickness and the time of year. Paint it too early and the moisture pushes the paint off. Paint it with a normal emulsion and it sits on the surface and peels. The answer is a watered-down mist coat that soaks in and seals, then the colour on top.

Most of the new plaster we paint in Darlaston follows a rewire or a damp repair in the older terraces, so it is often patches across several rooms rather than one fresh wall. The cost depends on how many rooms, how much of each is new and whether ceilings and woodwork are done at the same time. A photo of each room is enough to price it.

What's involved

The Painting New Plaster job in Darlaston

01

Dry means dry

Pink and even in colour, no dark patches. We check before painting rather than working to a calendar.

02

The mist coat

A thinned first coat of plain emulsion that the plaster drinks in, giving the finish coats something solid to hold on to.

03

Filling and sanding

Small nibs and trowel marks sanded down, cracks at corners caulked, so the finish is even under the light.

04

Finish coats

Two full coats in your colour once the mist coat has dried.

05

Patches blended

New patches sanded into the old walls so the edges do not show under the paint.

06

Woodwork at the same time

Skirting and frames often get marked during the work, so they can be done in the same visit.

Good to know

Painting New Plaster: what to know

How long should new plaster dry before painting?

Often around four weeks for a skim in a heated house, longer for thicker plaster or in winter. The colour tells you more than the calendar.

Can I use any emulsion for the mist coat?

Avoid vinyl or wipeable emulsions for the first coat. They seal the surface before the plaster has bonded with them.

Why is my new paint peeling?

Usually painted too soon or with no mist coat. The loose paint has to come off before it is redone.

Can I paint it myself after your mist coat?

Yes. Some customers have us do the preparation and mist coat and finish the colour themselves.

Why is my plaster cracking at the corners?

Hairline cracks at corners are common as a house settles after work. They are filled before painting.
